This Mother’s Day I was inspired to create a cake that was as beautiful as the dozen roses I wish my husband could have afforded to give me. Rather than tossing money into a vase full of flowers that would wilt in a few days, I got a mini shopping spree to the craft store where I picked up some new cake decorating supplies to go with the new set of Ultragold Bakeware I received from Wilton.
Of course, as part of my new cake adventure, I ran into some failures, including my first attempt at royal icing rose decorations. But rather than give up, I went for it and tried again. This time, the roses not only looked like roses, but they didn’t melt and made a beautiful topping for my cake.
With the help of my daughter’s, I grabbed all of the necessary ingredients, including a pair of Ultragold 8 inch Round Baking Pans. I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again, I love these! They are light, easy to clean and have really wide handles making them easy to pull out of the oven. Everyone should own a set!
With a little shortening and flour, they were ready for baking.

Following the directions for the Golden Yellow Cake Recipe by Wilton, my daughter Kaydee helped me round up all of the ingredients we needed.
We mixed together sugar and butter until well blended.
Added eggs, vanilla, baking powder, flour, milk and salt until it created a thick and beautiful yellow cake batter. And yes Jennifer (Milk and Honey Mommy) … I’ve most definitely crossed over to the homemade cake batter side. No more box mixes for me!
Into the oven the pair of yellow cakes went.
And out came two very beautiful golden yellow cakes.
Here’s where things got really fun for me, and my daughters. While I was busy whipping up the buttercream I had my two little taste testers by my side sampling the frosting to make sure it was just right. And for the record, Kaydence claims that the pink tastes much better than the white. (but that’s like saying the green m&m tastes better than the brown one)
I leveled and layered the two cakes with a thin coating of buttercream in between and gave it a quick crumb coat and a 1 hour trip to the freezer. This does wonders for keeping all of the crumbs off of the visible layer of frosting.
Next, I added the pink tinted buttercream to a pastry bag with a star tip to create a border around the base of the cake. This was actually fairly easy, until you get to the end of the border. I got a little messy there trying to join the two ends together.
Now, remember those roses I failed miserably at the other day? Well, these turned out beautiful! They’re not perfect by any means but for a second try, I’m giving myself a little pat on the back.
To achieve the beautiful bright pink, I used does a dash of the Wilton Concentrated Gel Rose Icing Color (610-401). You’ll notice the roses are two different shades because I added just a bit more Rose to the royal icing for my second pastry bag filling.
To finish off the cake I just added a dollop of buttercream to the bottom of each rose and stuck them randomly all over the top of the cake.
And don’t forget, keep check back each week for a new cake and a really big Wilton giveaway on June 1st!
The Wilton Ultragold Bakeware featured was provided free of cost to me by Wilton. Opinions expressed are my own and are NOT influenced by monetary compensation.

Gorgeous! You did a great job!
thats beautiful. I thought when I took my cake classes by wilton I would never get the roses down pat, but finally did. I think I can paint cabbage roses better than create from icing. the method sure is easier. great job
Thanks so much Julie, I’d still love to take a class or two.
Love it! That came out great!
I think that turned out great . I will have to let you know when I get my blog and running. It is all tips and tricks and we use all wilton products. Most of the things are from my girlfriend that lives in Texas . She took all 4 of the wilton cake courses.
Great Job
Definitely let me know it’s up, I’d love to come see!
Cat,
I’m so loving the scratch cooking. The cake is absolutely beautiful. I would have made chocolate though :)!
My mixer has died (and so have I). Have you ever made a cake using a food processor? I haven’t and I don’t want to start. Do you have any suggestions on the direction to go? I have a Kitchen Aid and may do it again.
I do love chocolate cake too but I really needed to try this Golden Yellow recipe, nothing beats a yellow cake for me.
What in the world did you do to your mixer? Can it be fixed?
I’ve never used a food processor for one but you could always pick up a cheap hand mixer.
good gawd Cat, you are so talented!!!!!! Oh how I wish you could go to Wilton..you would be amazing there. And I’m so jealous of your talent….I don’t think I could every do that!!! How long did it take for you to make it? decorating and all?
Thank you Lori! You always make me smile and I really wish I could be right there with you. Some day when these kids are older and my hubby’s schedule slows down I may make it out of the house.
The roses themselves took about an hour and overnight to dry.
Between the mixing, baking, freezing and decorating the rest took about 2 hours. But like I said, an hour of that was freezing the crumb coat. It wasn’t too bad at all time wise if you do it in sections.
You should absolutely give yourself a pat on the back! The cake & the roses look AMAZING! Great job!
Thank you Eleanor!
Geesh, that is just too pretty to eat! Although I’m sure I could manage it!
**wiping drool off my keyboard and monitor**
You have no idea how hard it was for me to cut that cake, I didn’t want to mess up the roses on top. lol
Cat, it looks great! The roses are awesome – I love that they’re two different shades of pink. It almost looks too good to eat!
Love it! Maybe I should have asked for this for Mother’s Day. It looks fun and turned out beautiful.
how pretty, looks so good/….
the cake looks fabulous, but i had to comment that your counter looks just like mine with the keurig on one side and the tassimo on the other. adding a different one soon. I will have no room left for cake decorating…but I would love to try!
You did a great job!
Cat, I said it before and I’ll say it again, that cake is amazing and you are amazing. You NEED to go to Wilton with us. PLEASE?!!!!!!!!
I’ll beg if you think it might help. I’m not opposed to groveling.
very impressive!
Beautiful cake! I would love to learn how to do that. My only problem is while I’m learning how to make these beautiful creations, I’d be tempted to eat all that delicious cake. Then I’d have to spend way too much time working out!! (O.k, maybe it would be worth it!)
Wowsers! Looks DEE-LISH and oh so beautiful! Awesome job!
That looks sooooo good, and beautiful to boot! I sometimes wish I was that good a cook. Then I wake up and realize I get to eat all the good food and not have to fix it…:) (My 16 yo son or my husband usually cook around here.)
You should add a picture of this cake into your header. It would be gorgeous and the pink would go perfectly!
Beautiful! I love the roses! This gives me motivation to bake a cake! lol. I really want to try work with some fondant but I’m a little intimated by it! I’m not really good at the whole ‘cooking thing’ in general.
So pretty! I took classes as a teen and LOVED it. I still do, but the whole process hurts my hands. So, when I got married and moved I gave everything to my sisters. (STUPID) Now, I want it all back. I’m slowly re-building my collection of tips and tools and enjoy doing small cakes here and there for birthdays.
Love your roses!
Wow you are really motivating me! I specialize in cupcakes I hope you will do a decorating project with those too!
omg it turned out great!!
That is so beautiful. I, too, love to play at decorating cakes, and nearly any kind of crafty thing.
I just love how it turned out Cat. Way to go gal.
Thank you Marj! I’ve never been too crafty, even with cake decorating but I sure love to try.
What a beautiful cake! Wish I could make those roses, but no such luck!
Definitely keep trying. Mine all came out pretty different with each rose but I think it really depended on getting the royal icing just right.
Wow, what a pretty cake. I think it’s good that the flowers aren’t all exactly the same color or shape, because no two roses in nature are.
Oh my!! That is simply gorgeous – you are EXTREMELY talented, friend! You go right ahead and pat yourself on the back.
that cake is awesome! You go girl!
Hope you had a great Mother’s day!
The cake looks beautiful. What a fun activity to share with your children.
That is seriously beautiful Cat! The roses are amazing. How did it taste?
Your roses turned out great!! Good job Cat! (My Wilton instructor couldn’t even make roses that well!!)
Cat that is really pretty. Where did you mess up because I can not tell. I wish you could see the faces of my daughters while they are looking at your pictures. They love it. They want to bake some cakes now! That is such a good idea that are you doing a different cake each week.
That is one gorgeous cake Cat! Awesome job!! You’re right, the UltraGold Bakewear is wonderful.
Those roses are gorgeous! I wish I could decorate cakes like that :(
PS – I have a set of these pans and I absolutely love them!
What a beautiful cake! I wish I had steady hands to create something like this for my family.
I am so jealous! I wish I could make roses like that! I made a Barbie birthday cake for my daughter this weekend, but I haven’t even mastered the basic star. I have a long way to go! Beautiful cake!
Can I sit next to you in Chicago? Please, please, please?

when I saw the cake on the wilton giveaway page, http://3kidsandus.com/2010/wilton-ultragold-bakeware-collection-giveaway-176-value/ , I assumed that you had borrowed the pictures from Wilton. Then I read the accompanying text – wow – you really made it yourself!!
