Searching through my holiday cookie decorating memories, I can’t think of a single one that involved gingerbread. That’s pretty amazing considering gingerbread could be considered the official cookie of Christmas in most homes. In mine, it has always been sugar cookies but this year, we wanted to reach outside of our little decorating box and have a little gingerbread fun.
Wilton, the ultimate brand for cookie cutter’s (in my opinion) sent me the most adorable gingerbread family cookie cutter set. While they aren’t the comfort grip cutters, which I typically prefer, these are lots of fun for making some holiday gingerbread cookie memories. Each set includes an adult size mom and dad plus child size boy and girl. With the help of my son, we rolled our gingerbread cookie dough and cut out 5 cookies, one for each member of our family.
We also played with the holiday roller cutter which has a really unique design. You can roll it across the dough cutting out multiple mini cookies really fast. The drawback? The cookie dough tends to stick inside each cookie cavity and distorts the edges a bit as you try to release them.
Once baked, we had a rows of little gingerbread people that were ready to decorate.
With the help of everyone in the family, we picked out a few decorations and decorating styles from the Wilton Cookie Exchange Book. Let me tell you, if you are short on decorating ideas, this book has you covered! Inside you’ll find pages upon pages of decorating styles for gingerbread, spritz, sugar snowflakes, ornaments and many other cookies.
“3 Kids and Us” Gingerbread Cookie Family
We also went out on a limb and attempted another gingerbread house kit. My history with this has always been pretty awful. One of the most difficult aspects for me is actually constructing the walls and getting them to stick together during the drying process. Well, problem solved. Wilton has a Pre-Baked, Fully Assembled Gingerbread House Kit!
Right out of the box, this is how the gingerbread house looks. The only thing left is the best part … decorating!
One of the easiest ways I’ve found to keep decorations from rolling all over the place is to use disposable cupcake liners to keep them all organized.
And that my friends, is our first gingerbread holiday experience as a family … a new tradition we definitely plan to keep for years ahead.
While many of the holiday items are selling out quickly in the Wilton store, you can still find many of these fun gingerbread products in stores and at Amazon online.
One lucky reader will win a Wilton Gingerbread prize pack that includes all of the items seen below valued at $48.75
