The Kit
Get ready to experiment with Elmer’s all-new MythBusters Science kits. Kids can get up close and personal with the Discovery Channel’s #1 series and determine for themselves the truth behind several well known urban legends. Through a trial and error, hands on format kids can bust myths related to everything from aviation to air pressure.
Our 8 year old son received the Weird Wold of Water Science Experiment Kit to discover the mysteries of water answering questions like: Can is suck a ship down the drain? Can it blast a rocket into space? Together, we sat down and did our own myth busting and learned some pretty interesting facts along the way.
The Myth
Our first experiment was to test out the “Myth of the Deadly Vortex” – Watch out for deadly whirlpools! Did you hear that these powerful swirls of water can suck in and destroy objects as large as a ship?
The Experiment
First things first, we opened up the Weird World of Water Science Kit that came neatly organized with everything we needed from a funnel to water bottles along with an activity guide to test out several myths. Although this particular kit is recommended for age 9 and up, our 8 year old son had no trouble following along with the step by step instructions.
Together we we followed the activity guide learning some interesting facts about “inertia” and “object density”, two words that my son has yet to learn about in school. The cool part for him was that instead of learning about water properties from a book, he got a hands on and visual approach to it. And of course, I loved the fact that he was having fun and learning at the same time. This wasn’t a project he had to do, it was something he wanted to do, and that’s the key to really learning any subject.
Closing Thoughts
So what do you think, was the Myth of the Deadly Vortex Busted? Confirmed? Well, we’re not going to spill the beans on that today, you’ll have to give this one a try yourself to find out. Overall, I’m really impressed with the experiments in the kit and all of the helpful information along with fun facts in the activity guide.
It’s no a perfect kit though. We ran into some major leaking issues between the bottle connectors that left us with a lot of water to cleanup.
