When it comes to holidays I’ve learned to have low expectations. In this family, a holiday pretty much means anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. But we still muster through hoping the good things will happen too. And sometimes … they do!
We started Mother’s Day weekend with a family lunch at Applebee’s. Usually we don’t take the kids in any restaurant whatsoever. They just get rowdy and the last time we all sat down for a dinner our daughter puked all over the booth at O’Charleys. But Saturday was different. The hostess was kind enough to seat us in a giant booth where they had room to wiggle and they actually behaved.
I got to indulge in my favorite fried chicken salad!
And I even shared a frozen Strawberry Summer Breeze drink with my hubby.
Then we made a little unplanned trip to the mall where they had a mini carnival set up in the parking lot. It’s nothing compared to the IL State Fair but there’s some fun rides, fried foods and no lines. Our first ride was this scrambler thing that actually set off the first of crappy events of the weekend … and it was all my fault.
Kaydee and Matt were tucked into one seat while me, Jon and Emma squeezed into another. I snapped a photo and tucked my iPhone inside my jacket. The ride … it was awesome! We got spun, swirled and scrambled till lunch was ready to reemerge. But then we all hopped off and took the girls to a little kiddie ride. It was then I realized my iPhone wasn’t in my jacket anymore. Hubs went up to the ticket booth where someone had turned in my phone …. after it flew off the ride. :(
Ugh …. I suppose this made it a lot easier to avoid using social media for Mother’s Day. To make matters worse I got hit with a horrible UTI that made me feel even worse.
So Sunday morning rolls around and we spend a few hours going to various stores to see if we could trade-in a few of our old phones for cash. Unfortunately Game Stop wouldn’t take any of them and the EcoATM wasn’t working right.
But then everything got great again. I got to open my Mother’s Day gifts!
Hubby has finally figured out I’m not a flowers and candy kind of girl. But he still doesn’t get that I’m more in love with homemade gifts from the kids than anything they could buy. Still, he took all the kids out Friday night to go shopping and well, he just seems to know me better than I know myself.
My first gift was this Libbey 18 pc Mini Serving Set. LOVE!
My second gift was this set of Tasting Spoons and an itty bitty tea cup. (my favorite)
And then he really shocked me with some new Pureology shampoo/conditioner and bath goodies.
Then Saturday afternoon my mom came over with dessert while I cooked up some loaded baked potato skins. All my favorite food in one sitting … chocolate covered strawberries, angel food cake, smoked pork sandwiches … mmmmm.
Despite a the broken iPhone, Emma tantrums in public, Matt backtalking at home and feeling ick from the UTI … Mother’s Day was absolutely wonderful! I got to spend time with the people I love most and that’s all that matters.
