Weekend Gardening – Tomatoes in the Raised Bed Garden

Ahhhh …sweet relief. After weeks of waiting we finally got the garden tilled and planted.

I thought for sure with the warm spell we got in March that we’d get to plant early this year but then April turned out to have some freakish cold spells and every weekend we planned to get it done in May it was preceded by rain making it impossible to till.

Today turned out to be perfect. It was somewhat warm, the soil was dry and hubs volunteered to go rent the tiller. But he wasn’t exactly thrilled with me snapping photos while he pushed that beast of a machine through the soil.

A few hours later my parents stopped by with some sweet little tomato plants, 12 of them to be exact, and we got them all planted. It’s a bit late but I’d rather have late tomatoes than none at all. A summer without BLT’s is unimaginable.

Did you do any gardening this year?

  1. My garden is going in late too, hopefully I can get it in tomorrow but my once pretty seedlings have had it rough!

  2. I’ve had mine in early, I’ve had them in late. It doesn’t seem to make a big difference in the final crop, just when you start picking the early ripening varieties.

This year, I ended out pulling my homegrown seedlings out, when Lowes had a big Earth Day sale & their $1.50 tomato plants made mine look pitiful … nothing like instant gratification…lol.

    • That’s good to know. We only planted 3 varieties .. big boy, better boy and one cherry tomato plant. All the grape tomato plants were gone. :(

  3. Love your hubby’s face in that second picture! LOL

I agree, better late then never, right? And at least you were able to get them planted! Illinois has had some really weird weather this year for sure o.O

  4. Looking good! I tried starting mine from seed, but the first batch died. I started a second set, but they’ll be late bloomers! And in the meantime, I cheated and bought a Roma tomato plant so I don’t have to wait until September for tomatoes. :)

  5. I’m late to the game too. I’m going to be planting my garden this week. I think the weather threw everyone off this year!

  6. lol! That photo of your hubby is great! We just planted our last weekend (hopefully I remember to take photos and post about it soon!) We planted less than we did last year but I think our garden will still be nice if I can keep the dang chickens out of it!

  7. Hahaha! I love your husbands face! My husband wants to build a table then put plants into it. Like a super raised bed. Someone on our street has that. I would much rather just do raised beds. Good luck on the tomatoes!
