I confess, I’m a bit of a shop-a-holic. It’s a bad habit I picked up as a teenager that I was forced to curb as our expenses grew with each child. One thing I did find helpful was joining reward programs with my favorite stores. It’s an easy way for me to have a little fun shopping and not go over budget in the process.

Recently I discovered one of my most used stores, Walgreens, started a new program called Balance Rewards. It’s a loyalty card program for frequent Walgreens shoppers like myself that lets you rewards points for everyday purchases. Whether you’re shopping online or in-store, you can earn points on your purchases.

The easiest way to sign up for this program is to visit www.walgreens.com/balance and click the Join now button.

You’ll be redirected to sign-up page where you can login to your existing Walgreens.com account or create a new one. Your phone number is linked to your account so you can start using your membership when the program officially starts on September 16, 2012.

Once logged in your account you have access to everything from the weekly ad to your reward point balance. It makes it easy to see how many points you’ve accumulated and how much money in rewards you’ve earned. 5,000 points = $5 back in your pocket!

You’ll also notice that Walgreens has a mobile app. I downloaded this right away to my iPhone so I can access Walgreens anytime I want, wherever I want. Inside the app there are some pretty cool features including the Pharmacy, Photo Center and even your Balance Rewards information.

What I love most about the app is having access to the weekly ads. I’m not fond of fumbling through the paper ad in the store so it’s a lot easier to go through the visual (or list) version of the ad on my mobile phone before I go to the store.

Just today I looked through the new Sunday ad to see if there were any deals on a few items I needed for my shopping trip. It’s a lot easier to drive a mile to my local Walgreens than 10 miles to a big box store when I have a small shopping list. And of course my husband was complaining he ran out of body soap so I went in to take advantage of the buy one, get one free deal on Dial body soap.

Being the “list-making” kind of person that I am, I found the Shopping List feature of the Walgreens App really easy to use. You can browse through the mobile app ad and add items directly to your shopping list, write your own in and have access to prices and sale information while you shop.
