Whenever my husband utters the words, “let’s take a trip!” … I want to curl into a ball, in a dark closet, with a deadbolt on the door. That’s how thrilled I am about taking any kind of trip that involves all three kids. It’s not that I don’t enjoy traveling or even my kids, it’s that traveling with kids is WORK. I do all of the same at-home-mom duties except now they’re all tucked into a traveling van with added chaos. By the time I get back into my own bed, I’m so exhausted from the “fun family trip” that I need a vacation alone to recover from it.
Our most recent trip was just 100 miles away back to St. Louis, a place we called home for over 3 years. We try to visit every year but sometimes life happens. This time we managed to make down on a day that can only be described as the dreariest of days, looking like a scene out of The Walking Dead.
Fortunately, this trip included an extra guest … my mommy! She had been wanting to see The Great Forest Park Balloon Race & Glow for years and this time it worked out perfectly for her to come with us. It was nice to have an extra set of eyes on the kids when we’re almost always outnumbered by the three of them.
After a quick dinner and check in at the hotel, we walked through Forest Park to the large open area where over a dozen hot hair balloons were all lined up and glowing. This event is worth going to every single year just to see the beauty of the balloons. There’s always a good variety including some unique designs like the much-loved Energizer bunny balloon and our kids’ favorite, the bubble gum machine balloon. We did miss the giant Pepsi can balloon we’d seen in years past.
The day following the glow, the balloons all take off and travel across the St. Louis skies in a “race”.
