Whenever possible I try to avoid self humiliation but this is one of those times that it was just too funny not to share. It also helps that I made a horrible mess into a beautiful dish with quick thinking. So if you happen to make a cake roll disaster, here’s a great solution.
So here I am in the kitchen, video camera ready, going through all of the steps and demonstrating how to make this beautiful black forest cake roll. I try something new and use the Chocolate-Chocolate Cake Batter recipe from Wilton, melting chocolate, lots of butter … it was finger lickin’ good even before it hit the oven.

Once the batter was ready I went back to my Flip video recorder and spread the batter in the Wilton Ultragold 11 x 17 Jelly Roll Pan. This pan was made for the exact cake I was attempting to bake! Rather than completely embarrass myself and show the video, I just pulled a few photos from it.
The batter was beautiful and smelled way more delicious than any boxed cake mix I’ve ever used.

After some time in the oven, a few pokes to make sure it was baked evenly and out came this gorgeous sheet of chocolate cake.

So here’s where it got tricky. I checked several cake roll sources, followed the instructions to a T and my cake rolled up beautifully. It seriously couldn’t have been more perfect …. until I unrolled it.

DISASTER!!!!!
My poor cake just broke to pieces. No amount of icing could fix this.
But hey, I’m a mom, I’ve got tricks up my sleeve for every situation. There’s no way I’m letting this get me down and I’m certainly not letting that chocolate cake go to waste!
After some digging through my cabinets I find my Trifle Dish and get to work. First a layer of chocolate cake chunks, then a layer of the Stabilized Whipped Cream then a generous topping of cherry pie filling. Repeat and Voila!

Oh it does look so yummy!!! Can I come over?! LOL
Cat,
Okay. Yep! You did it and it looks great and delicious too! Hmm…do we have a possible cake box mix convert? I’m still waiting for you.
That looks delish! I’ve had my eye on those pans for awhile! I love trifle bowl recipes as well.
That is too funny. Mama rescued the cake!
Why did you need to unroll it?
With cake rolls you are suppose to roll it while it’s warm so the shape will set, then you unroll it after it has cooled, add your filling and carefully roll the cake back up. I never made it quite that far.
This is my absolute most favorite cake in the whole world! Why do your pictures have to be soooo luscious? *sobs*

That looks delicious!!! I LOVE the Wilton tent sale! Seriously come up! You can stay at my house and the kids can play.
I’m trying to talk my husband into canceling his training class that day so we can make it up there, so far no luck.
Cat, way to turn lemons into lemonade! It looks gorgeous and yummy! By the way, I love your hayneedle ad on your sidebar. :)
LOL We were just talking about them last night, which ad is displaying Hayneedle?
Yummy and great solution! :)
Wow, you really are one creative mother!!
Even though it didn’t turn out the way that was intended, the final product looks AMAZING :)
Way to go!
I *love* the Wilton Tent Sale! If you’re anywhere within a day-trip driving distance, it is fun and worth the trip. I grew up about 5 minutes from there, so I’m going to try to make it in June.
I love that you took a busted cake and made a delicious trifle! it looks DELICIOUS. I love cake so I can’t wait to see all the surprises you have in store ;)
I hope you try making the roll again, I have always wanted to try that out but I figured it would be too difficult for me lol/
The trifle looks delish!!!
That looks so good! And what a great idea to make it into something else! I hope you wrote down your recipe, err…mistake so you can make it again later!? :)
looks like it might have been even better in the end.
That looks seriously delicious. I have had disasters turn into family faves too.
That looks really yummy. I am impressed you were able to adapt like that.
Yum! I think the trifle looks even better than the roll ever would have! Great save!
I have a new Trifle dish that I have not used yet and this looks so good. I tried to roll a cake once and it did not turn out for me.
I think desserts look so pretty in a trifle dish…
Yum!
Thanks, Cindi
This looks so yummy! You handled it better than I would have…I probably would have either tried to glue it together with WAY too much frosting…or just started eating it in the kitchen while whining to the hubby about how it broke apart!
Mmmmmmmm! Yummy
That looks delish, great job! Will have to defiantly try that this summer!
Wow ~ you made it look so professional looking and delicious. Thanks for sharing. I think even I could make this.
That looks good. I think a chocolate cake roll is harder to make than a white cake roll, it is more likely to break.
I’ve always wanted to try this desert, but afraid. With your instructions, I may give it a try!!!

Great save on the “it won’t roll” problem! Looks delicious.
I’ve never made a trifle, but I may try one now :)
You need to enter a Betty Crocker bale off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I have a trifle bowl that I asked for and never tried yet! THAT black forest cake trifle looks SO good…I will try it with fresh strawberries, now that they are in season. SO luscious and you must be a VERY seasoned cook to save the day like that!
thanks for the cool trick!
You know, I’ve done this myself a few times when a cake just didn’t turn out quite like I hoped. :)
wow you do a very good cooking job!!
Not usually mt favorite cake but now I’m inspired to try it again!
Well you certainly could not tell from the finished product that it was plan B. Looks so delicious.
I have always wanted to try a jelly roll but I was always afraid of that happening. This hasn’t helped but at least you recovered well.
On the giveaway page, I said that this trifle makes me want to lick my screen. Even though you intended it as one thing and it didn’t pan out exactly that way, you still baked up some deliciousness
… and I still want to lick my screen
