The first quarter of the school year is just about finished for our three kids. I’d like to think I’ve found my groove when it comes to managing our often very busy schedule. I still have those days, you know, the ones where you find yourself completely exhausted by the time the kids get off the school bus. On days like those, the last thing I want to do is stand over the stove cooking. I often know when a day like that is coming and plan ahead of time with a slow cooker meal. The lovely, amazing, trusty slow cooker. On a busy day, it can be a mom’s best friend.
I recently picked up a Kraft Recipe Makers New England Pot roast meal kit from Walmart. It’s a brand new product and one I hope to see on store shelves for a very long time. Pot roast has been a dish I’ve loved since my childhood but it’s also one of those family meals that I’ve never been able to get just quite right when it comes to the flavor and spices. Kraft solved that problem for me!
This meal kit includes a bottle of Classic Herb Simmering Sauce and a packet of Farmhouse Style Brown Gravy Finishing Sauce. The two work together to make the most flavorful pot roast I’ve ever had! The Kraft Recipe Makers kit gives you the flavors and it’s up to you to prepare the rest of the dish just the way you like it. For our family, a traditional pot roast starts with a bottom round rump roast, plenty of quartered red-skinned potatoes, carrots, celery and sweet yellow onions. All of those ingredients go right into the slow cooker in the morning.
Next, you pour the bottle of simmering sauce over the ingredients, put the lid on and cook it on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 6-8 hours.
The sauce alone smells amazing. You can see all of the bits of vegetables, herbs and spices.
About 15 minutes before you plan on serving the pot roast, it’s time to pull out the packet of finishing sauce. The rich brown gravy is what really puts this dish over the top for me.
The best part of this complete meal is the fact that it didn’t require any time spent over a hot stove when you’re already tired. Just prep the ingredients in the morning and let the slow cooker do all the work for you.
The final verdict?
This was the first time in this house that a pot roast disappeared from everyone’s plates without any leftovers. This was one of the best family meals we’ve had in quite some time and one we’ll be putting on our weekly meal plan through the end of winter. Next, we plan on trying the Kraft Recipe Makers Sweet n Sour chicken kit.
