We’re now just two days from hitting the road for our family vacation to Marco Island, FL and Disney World. The girls still don’t know we’re surprising them with the Disney part of the trip and I think we’re going to keep it that way until a few hours before we arrive there. What they do know is we’re going to be stuck in that darn minivan for 3 days worth of driving. They’re about as thrilled as I am.

To make the hours on the road go a bit more smoothly or at least as complaint-free as possible, my husband and I snuck off to Toys R Us to put together some road trip activity bags for the girls.

For less than $50 we put together little Disney themed bags full of goodies to keep them entertained. I even grabbed a bag of big Lego blocks that were on sale but now that I think about it, I’m probably going to spend more time retrieving dropped blocks than they will spend building with them.

Inside the bags we included goodies like:

  • beach themed Barbie dolls
  • cheap dress up pieces with hair clips, bracelets and the sort
  • Disney themed sand toys
  • coloring books with crayons
  • Crayola Mess-Free Color Wonder kits
  • magnetic drawing pad and book

Additionally we’re also bring along the iPad, which I’m sure they’ll be fighting over and later this evening we’ll need to do some shopping for road trip snacks.

If everything goes according to our plan, we’ll be stopping in Chattanooga, TN for the first leg of the trip, then in Tampa, FL for the second leg and arrive early in Marco Island, FL on the third day.

But the real question here is, can we really keep these girls entertained the whole way there? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous.

If you have some tips for us, I’m all ears!

Traveling with kids is never easy! We’ve been to Florida with the kids and the fighting always ensues. You did a great thing with the activity bags. Do fun sing a long songs as well:) Goodluck and have fun!

As you know, we recently did the road trip thing. We had a fun book — Carioke (Here’s a link: that we had good fun with…and also an alphabet game where you have to find road signs or license plates that begin with each letter of the alphabet (in order). I know some people say NOT to eat in the car, but, we allowed healthy snacks as our kids wished (fruit, dried fruit, fruit crushers, cheese squares, cubes and string cheese (we had a cooler in the place of one of our Captain’s Chairs in our mini van that the kids could reach) and went for fun treats along the way (Slurpees, ice cream, etc. during our stops). We didn’t do “real” meals, but, our kids really enjoyed the novelty of the snacks along the way.

As you know, our trip didn’t go quite as planned. Of course, I hope yours is without issue, but, remember, at least half the fun is in getting there! :)

    Safe travels!

I only have one daughter (she’s 5), but we took a 12 hour road trip in June and she did great. She had a goody bag of stuff, too – I actually emailed this list to my friend who is on a road trip with 4 year old twins…I just searched travel games for kids on amazon then read some reviews…thought I’d share it with you, too.

Belkin Xm Auto Cassette Adapter – We used this A LOT – you just put it in the tape player in your car and connect it to your mp3 player = music playing out of your car speakers! Brilliant!

We also used this a ton, too – you can plug in 2 USB’s at once so the ipod and kindle could be charged at the same time…or my phone… PowerGen Dual USB 2A / 10w (fast) Heavy Duty

Travel Tangoes-Objects — these were a bit hard, but fun nonetheless

Melissa & Doug Flip to Win Memory Game –this one could get loud as they flip the things, but there are lots of cards and she enjoyed it.

Lacing and Tracing Sea Life 8/Pk Ages 3-7 — she got into this on the way back…

Lauri Toys Dot-2-Dot Lacing Enchanted Kingdom – she loved these

I thought this would be one of her favorites….and she did play with it a lot…but it wasn’t as cool as I thought it would be… Crayola Glow Station On the Go Day & Night

Best Travel Activity Book Ever, AA (Backseat Books) — this was her favorite. Tons of stuff to do in this book – connect the dots, find matches, figure out puzzles, mazes, etc. it was a good one!

We also had crayons and paper…and though I thought she would want the kindle and ipod a lot, she really didn’t. hope it helps, and have fun!

We just love these bags. When birthdays come around I always ask family to ditch wrapping paper and buy these for gifts. They’re great bags for overnight trips, holding toys, etc.

I have seen plenty of bags but they were either way to big or to small and not very pretty these were just perfect for my grand kids since they are 4-6-8 so I got Each their favorite Disney theme too!
These bags will now be multiplying for many different reasons around my house :))
        Much Thanks!

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous FOR you! I honestly can’t imagine being in the car for 3 whole days; my body can’t even handle 2 hours o.O

I think those Disney themed fun bags are a great touch!
