We have three kitties roaming the halls of our home. While they provide us with a lot of love and joy, they also leave behind some things I really don’t enjoy. There’s the constant shedding, the occasion coughed up hairball and the worst of all, the litter box odors. We try to keep those odors to a minimum by keeping the litter boxes in a closed door cat room (aka hall closet) with a cat door. We even scoop the litter box several times per day. But the odor issue is never quite gone, just kept to a minimum.

At this point, we’re open to trying new cat litters, especially ones that have been improved with new ingredients. Fresh Step set us up with a sniff test to compare two leading cat litter brands with the new & improved Fresh Step®  Triple Action litter. The test that was provided included three jars labeled A, B and C. Each contained a sampling of different cat litters treated with 2 drops of garlic oil.

cat litter and garlic sniff test

I had my family sit down and help me with the test. We gave each jar a light shake, opened the lid and sniffed. The results?

Jar A – We unanimously agreed this was the worst smelling jar. The garlic odor was so strong and awful.

Jar B – Surprisingly, it smelled like clean cat litter. None of the five of us could detect even a hint of garlic. Honestly, I find it hard to believe garlic was even in this jar.

Jar C – Awful! Although it was nearly as bad smelling as jar A, it was still filled with a strong garlic smell.

Fresh Step Garlic Test Winner

When I flipped over the jars to reveal the cat litter brands, I found the winner was the new Fresh Step®  Triple Action litter.

This new formula includes a proprietary new ingredient that combines with activated carbon to eliminate odors better than before. The new ingredient, natural plant extracts, contain chlorophyll and esssential oils. They work together to bind to odors and eliminate them from the air while also blocking odors before they leave the litter box. These new ingredients have been added to Fresh Step litter products including:

  • NEW Fresh Step® Triple Action Litter: Activated carbon and added plant extracts fight all three sources of odor: urine, feces and bacteria. SRP is $10.29 for a 20 lb box.
  • Fresh Step® Multi-Cat Scented and Unscented Scoopable Litter: Even in multiple cat households, the carbon and plant extracts in this litter formula eliminate odors naturally. SRP is $10.29 for a 20 lb box.
  • Fresh Step® Odor Shield Scented and Unscented Litter: This unscented litter contains activated carbon and plant extracts eliminate odors naturally, without any perfume or dyes. SRP is $10.29 for a 20 lb box.
  • Fresh Step® Extreme Odor Control Scented and unscented Litter: The patented CarbonPLUS™ technology eliminates extreme odors from urine and feces and now features improved odor control SRP is $10.29 for a 20 lb box.
