One year ago today our little Emma was conceived. I’m sure it’s strange that I even know this, especially since we weren’t “trying” to get pregnant. I didn’t have a clue where I was in my cycle, I was still breastfeeding Kaydence so things were a little hit and miss when it came to ovulation.
I’m sure you couldn’t care less about the time line of my eggs, but I want to share my camping warning with you.
Camping leads to bugs, which leads to hotel rooms, which leads to unplanned sex, which leads to babies. Period.
Last summer, June 1st, we packed our gear, tent, sleeping backs, cooler, our little family of four and headed down to the southern Illinois little town of Murphysborough. Off the main roads and to the lake we went. Not only was this our first camping trip as a family but we were tagging along with my parents. With that in mind, there were no plans of steamy, passionate nights in the tent with my husband when our kids would be in there with us and my parents in a tent just 20 feet away. So needless to say, we didn’t bring contraceptives with us.
The first day was great, setting up the tents, buying the food and exploring the lake.
The seond night is where things got a little tricky. The number one rule of camping in the summer is always, always zip the tent door shut as quickly as possible. If you don’t, you’re sleeping with the bugs. And that’s exactly what happened to us when our son left the door about 5 inches unzipped at dusk.
By the time we realized it, several hours had passed and we were heading to bed for the night to discover hundreds of little bugs and mosquitos buzzing around inside our tent. It was a buggy nightmare.
I feel like such a wimp saying this….but I just couldn’t take it. I packed the kids up and we found the nearest and cheapest hotel to stay for the night. I had the best warm, clean shower ever and snuggled in the cozy, bug-free bed for the night with my husband.
Two weeks later I was queezy and had a positive pregnancy test in my hand. That’s when we became 3 Kids and Us.

Cat,
That story oozes w/romance. Just think, if you hadn’t gone camping (you wouldn’t have such a beautiful little blessing), then your blog probably would have been boring, I wouldn’t have a great place to hangout throughout the day, and you wouldn’t have connected w/so many wonderful people :D! Personally, I’m glad you went camping. Maybe, you should go again. Life could only get more interesting.
Thanks for letting me know how all of “that stuff” happens. I was also in a bed other than my own; w/my husband of course!
I run from bugs and mosquitoes too!
haha, so funny ! I got pregnant with my last one in a hotel too! So funny. Actually know alot of people that have become pregnant when staying away from home !
What a camping story. I would have been looking for a hotel too. Guess it was a good one. Glad you started 3 Kids and Us, I really love your blog.
I would go to the hotel too LOL hate bugs…cool post!
I am sooo not a camping person so yeah hotel all the way for me. Great story!
I am not a camping person. Hotels are the way to go. Love the story.
This is such a sweet and beautiful story, thank you s much for sharing, and for the photos. You have a gorgeous family!!
I keep tellling my husband I will never go camping but if would get me a baby, maybe I’d consider it.
Thank Goodness for Bugs, We are now able to enjoy 3kidsandus.. Thanks to the Mosquitos….
Love your blog..
Have a great day!
I love hearing stories like these actually!!! It completely gives me baby fever!!!
That’s a good story. Our last one was conceived in a field beside a fire under a full moon.
That is so funny! How old was your youngest when you got pregnant? You said you were still breastfeeding so I am curious. I am breastfeeding my 14 month old and we had an oops the other night. I wouldn’t be upset if I got pregnant but we do want to wait until I lose this last 15 pounds of baby weight first!
It’s funny you say this because I was in Laughlin Nevada with a bunch of family. and that is where Sarah came from
That’s too funny :)
What a great ‘accident’ though, hey? Our daughter was unexpected [to say the least] as well!
It is amazing how the unplanned ones are the ones that really do change us forever! Which then again all of mine except for the oldest were unplanned. LOL
Camping is fun but not when your being attacked by insects.
I give you credit girl. I would have went for the hotel right away. I am too scared to go camping. How cool you can remember the day.
What an interesting story.
I guess, I have to remember to pack more items when I go camping next time.
YUCK! Bugs and wackos are the reason I dont do camping! Hotels are so much nicer! Yeah, I was wondering how you knew the exact date! lol Too funny! :)
Congrats!
Its a cute story.
AAACCckkkkk I hate BUGS
lol on vacation equals baby. Don’t think I’ve ever had that happen. NEVER will either.
have any more vacations planned??? Hummmmmmmmm?
looks like a beautiful place by the way. Luv the fishing pic
Thank goodness for bugs. Things like this always happen when you least expect it.
Where does the time go my little one just turned 1 two days ago?
Lucy
Great story!! Glad you didn’t name Emma anything like “running-from-bugs”.
Thanks for giving entries for comments on non-giveaway posts. Just a little incentive to do something that’s so fun!
This is not very encouraging for our first camping trip with the kids in September…
If that had been me, I would have been so miserable and mad there would still have been 2 kids and us. ;)
