About Flor

flor_logo-1Launched in the spring of 2003 and based in Elmhurst, Illinois (just outside Chicago), FLOR is a line of design-inspired carpet squares for the home that lets you create unique area rugs, runners or wall-to-wall carpet designs quickly and easily.

The company was founded on the idea that carpet could be fun, stylish, practical and responsible. We think FLOR carpet tiles answer the call. The modular design means you can customize FLOR to fit any size space, even the most difficult layout, and take FLOR with you wherever you go. FLOR is also eco-friendly having some of the lowest Volatile Organic Compound emissions (VOCs) in the industry. Plus, FLOR comes in a wide variety of colors, patterns and textures so it gives you freedom to create exactly the right design for your room and your style.

Imagine living in a new house for 3 years and it looking pretty much the same as it did the day we moved in. That’s how picky I am about finding the perfect decorative accessories for our living space. When I first discovered the Flor company online, I was instantly struck with intrigue. Finding the perfect rugs for our home has been a daunting task. I’ve been to dozens of stores and either the rug didn’t fit the space, didn’t have the right colors, or was just completely out of our price range. Do people really spend $600 for a single rug? And then spend it again when one of your kids spills red juice on it? Well, not me!

So here I am browsing through all of the rugs on the Flor website when it dawned on me that when you buy from Flor, you’re not buying a whole rug. You’re buying modular carpet tiles. These modular tiles piece together to create the design, pattern, and size of rug YOU want. There’s no issue of finding the perfect design only to find out it won’t fit the space you need it for, it’s completely up to you on how to piece your tiles together.

Let’s walk through the process. I picked out the Seagrass Stripe Rug in Acorn/Reed. This set of tiles encompassed all of the colors I was looking for! Now of course you don’t have to pick a set, you can purchase any combination of colors you want. A few days later I was greeted by the delivery man with a box of 12 carpet tiles, instructions, and sticky dots. This is where the fun began. With 12 tiles the possibilities were just about endless. At first I thought, hmm..maybe I’ll create a long runner for our entryway. I laid the tiles out and decided, maybe just a smaller rug for in front of the tv where the kids often sit and I’ll have some leftover tiles for spills. Of course I just couldn’t make up my mind and finally settled on a full 5″ x 7″ rug for under the coffee table.

As you can see, nothing is final, the tiles are easily moved from one design to another until you find the perfect look. Each tile is then pieced together with strong adhesive sticky dots at all of the joints and outer seams. So what makes this such an ingenious idea? Say my son decides to drop a glass of juice on a section of the rug and I can’t get the stain out. Instead of spending big money on a whole new rug, all I have to do is call up Flor and purchase the single tiles that are easily replaced thanks to the non-permanent Flordots. As a family on a tight budget, I’m now in love with Flor! And in case small projects still give you trouble, Flor has a great resource section with instructional videos.

My rug is just one example of what you can do. Check out these other great rug designs and ideas. My next project? I plan on purchasing another set of the same tiles to create a runner for our L-shaped hallway and I can do this for less than $200. Oh and yes, I do have one more project. See that really cute Disney Princess rug below. We’ll be doing one of those for our daughter’s room this summer.

We just used Flor to do area rugs through our whole house after ripping out the existing (and destroyed) carpet. Between 4 cats, a dog, a toddler, and a soon-to-be-newborn, regular carpet is a disaster for us. Flor, on the other hand, is a godsend. Cat barfs on a tile? Pick it up and hose off in the tub. Voila! Like new!

I really couldn’t be happier with this stuff!

  5. Asha says:

  9. ai love the idea behind this. I haev seen these on many decoratig shows. I was thinking they would be great for wall to wall. If ou get a stain tha you can’t get out just pull the stained one up and replace it. I might have to put these in my sons room.
