Difference Between White And Black Chia Seeds

Here comes an unusual blogpost, we will be posting several recipes containing the superhealthy Chia Seed, so I thought I’d start this series off with a little fun-fact about this extraordinary superfood!

Chia, which also means oily, is an annual herb native to Guatemala and central and southern Mexico. The plant belongs to the mint family and is grown commercially for its seeds. The seeds measure no more than 1 mm in diameter but are world famous due to their rich composition in omega-3 fatty acids. The seeds may be mottled with gray, black, brown or white; however, white and black are the most dominant colors. For us quality is really important, especially when it comes to cooking and recipes, be sure to get high quality chia seeds. I have actually found the best place to purchase chia seeds, so go and check it out!

Black and White Chia Seeds

If there is any major difference between white and black Chia seeds, then it is just that: color. Their nutritional composition may vary, not because of color, but due to where they have been grown. It is important to note that such nutritional differences are usually quite negligible. You may choose between the colors for aesthetic purposes. Your food may appear more appealing when integrated with white Chia than its black counterparts.

How To Eat Chia

You may consume Chia seeds by adding them to your favorite dishes such as garnish but chewing them may reduce access to omega-3 fatty acids. You can circumvent this challenge by grinding or soaking them.

Health Benefits of Chia seeds

Anti-aging

Chia contains copious amounts of anti-oxidants, implying that they can slow down your aging process. They accomplish such a feat by preventing premature skin aging as it speeds up skin repair processeses.

Treatment for Diabetes

Researchers at the University of Litoral, Argentina, were able to prove, through experiments, that Chia was able to combat dyslipidemia and insulin resistance – two causative factors of diabetes. They proved that a sucrose rich diet with generous amounts of Chia would completely cure diabetes patients.

Strong bones

You may be wondering how to make your aging bones stronger again. You will be glad to know that Chia has 18% of the recommended amount of calcium you require on a daily basis. Also present in Chia is boron, which helps in the breakdown of calcium, leading to healthy bones.

Panacea to the nagging weight problem

If you are on a physical exercise program as a way of losing weight, you need to include Chia in your daily menu. The seeds contain high amounts of proteins needed to build muscle which would replace the fats burned away by exercising. Moreover, it will also boost your metabolism and tackle your dental problems.

Recipe | Pink Lemonade Sherbet Party Punch

Last month when we had Emma’s birthday party featuring Rapunzel I was looking to make a quick party punch to share with my family. Of course Miss Emma wanted something pink so I tossed some ideas around, gave hubby a short grocery list and we whipped up a punch that everyone loved. It’s simple, sweet and perfect for any gathering or pink themed birthday party. It also happens to look pretty darn gorgeous in a nice glass punch bowl.

The kids love the frothy top almost as much as the icy bottom and then of course making sour faces when they suck on the lemons. If you are looking for something a little more healthy I suggest you check out chia!

Dipped and Decorated Rice Krispies Treat Eggs for Easter

Three simple ingredients combined together make one of my absolute favorite treats of all time.

  • Butter
  • Marshmallows
  • Rice Krispies cereal

We’re talking about Rice Krispies Treats my friends. They’re easy enough for a child to make (with supervision of course) and can be molded into just about any shape imaginable. For Easter, we thought it would be fun to mold our treats into egg shapes.

It all starts with a very simple recipe … 4 TBS butter and 4 cups of mini marshmallows melted over a low heat along with 7 cups of Rice Krispies cereal mixed in.

rice krispies stuffed in plastic egg

You simply use any size of plastic Easter eggs, coated in non-stick cooking spray and stuff them with warm Rice Krispies Treats mix and let them sit for about 10 minutes.

If you’d like to make them extra special, fill the center with a candy before molding the eggs. We used gum eggs for the centers of ours.

While I’m sure there are a million and one ways to decorate these, one flavor combination I love is cereal treats and Wilton candy melts. You can dip and decorate the eggs with bright Easter colors and all sorts of candy decorations.

Tip — To achieve the marbled candy colors seen below, just use a piping bag filled with three different Wilton Candy Melts colors. For these marbled eggs I striped each side of my piping bag with pink, blue and purple.

Another fun way to serve up these Rice Krispies Treat Eggs is to use props. You can put them on sticks with a clear candy bag tied off with ribbon or use these fun Easter Basket Cupcake Wrapp from Wilton.

No matter what treats you bake this Easter, I hope you have fun doing it. Happy Easter friends!

Recipe | Easy and Creamy White Chicken Enchiladas

Let me preface this recipe with this …. I’ve never experienced Mexican food outside of Taco Bell. That’s a sad fact right there. So my knowledge on the cooking methods and ingredients are zilch. What I am great with is experiments based on my own experiences with ingredients. That’s how this white chicken enchilada came about. I first heard of such a thing at Lori’s blog on My Wooden Spoon where she made a similar enchilada dish.

What I can tell you is this …. these are freaking delicious. Probably heavy on the calories, but flavorful and filling regardless. I combined basic ingredients and my all time favorite cheat, pre-cooked rotisserie chicken.

Below you’ll find all the steps I took to make this dish, minus the sauce which you can make from the recipe at the bottom. I used corn tortillas (enchilada size) which resulted in six very hearty enchiladas.
